BBB Basic, Better, Best: The real Easy Button!

Mindful MATERIALS’ Common Material Framework (CMF) defines a common language for sustainability attributes of building products. Basic Better Best (BBB) makes the CMF actionable at scale, by allowing owners and firms to align their product selection standards.
BBB was originally created as a tool for major owner clients to institutionalize their product standards and make product assessment easier. Brightworks, Perkins&Will , BuildingEase and Green Commons, as the new BBB Collective, together are developing the BBB benchmarks for high priority product categories, giving the industry the first real “Easy Button” to simplify the complexity of decision making.

How does BBB work?
The magic of BBB is that it is NOT yet another ‘standard’ that sets a single objective bar to evaluate products.
BBB builds on mindfulMATERIALS’ CMF by using industry criteria, balanced with market realities of what is available and then lets every owner or design firm add their own prioritization, or weighting to the CMF criteria that align with their internal goals. That means the same product might come out as “better” based on one owner’s priorities but “best” based on another owner’s priorities. This is already how standards happen, but with each organization reinventing the wheel, spending enormous amounts of time and effort to achieve the same result.
What does this mean for me?
For manufacturers, this means two things. First, you can see how different owner standards ‘rank’ your products and make decisions based on that information. Second, this means your products will be much easier to find and get consistently installed! The BBB Collaborative is working through all of the product categories, establishing the appropriate metrics based on that category and market realities.
For owners or design firms who have internal commitments for materials, but have not yet created their own internal standards, now you will have an “easy button’ and a shortcut to establishing them. BBB is opening up the tool to select firms now for beta testing and will be rolling out the tool for the industry after that.
